Humidity and comfort
In this climate, most complaints about temperature are actually complaints about moisture. Understanding the difference saves money.
Two numbers, not one
Comfort is temperature and relative humidity together. A house at 73 degrees and 65 percent relative humidity feels muggy and smells musty; the same house at 73 and 50 percent feels fine.
Turning the thermostat down to fix a humidity problem produces a house that is cold and damp, and a larger bill.
Run time removes moisture
Air conditioning dehumidifies as a by-product of cooling — moisture condenses on the cold coil and drains away — and that only happens while the system runs.
An oversized system satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off before it has removed much water. This is the most common reason a newly replaced system feels worse than the one it replaced.
When you need dedicated dehumidification
A whole-home dehumidifier works independently of the cooling call, so it can hold humidity in range on mild spring and fall days when the air conditioner barely runs at all.
On the Georgia coast that covers a substantial part of the year, which is why it solves problems that equipment changes alone do not.
Rule the simple things out first
Duct leakage pulling humid attic or crawlspace air into the system. A blocked condensate drain. Ventilation bringing in more outdoor air than the system was designed to dry. Bath and kitchen exhaust that does not actually vent outside.
All four are common, and none of them require new equipment to fix.
