What usually goes wrong

Most no-cool calls come down to a short list. A failed run capacitor — cheap, quick, and by far the most common. A seized contactor holding the compressor off while the indoor fan keeps blowing, which is why the vents are still moving air. A fouled or iced evaporator coil, which looks like a refrigerant problem from the thermostat but is usually an airflow problem. A blocked condensate drain tripping the float switch, which shuts the whole system down with no warning at all.

And a low charge — which matters more than the others, because refrigerant is not consumed. It circulates in a sealed loop. If it is low, it leaked, and adding more without finding the leak buys weeks rather than years. A technician should be telling you where it went.

In this climate there is a sixth cause worth naming: the system is fine and the house is humid. A home that hits its set temperature and still feels wrong is describing a moisture problem, not a cooling one, and no repair to the outdoor unit will change it.

How we diagnose it

Electrical, refrigerant side and airflow, in that order, before any part is replaced. That sequence is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that fails again in three weeks — a part swapped on a hunch fixes a symptom and leaves the cause running.

You get the finding in plain terms: what failed, why, and what it takes to put right. Where the system is far enough through its life that a repair is not worth making, we will say so and explain the reasoning rather than quietly steering you toward a replacement.

What you can safely check first

Before you call, four things are worth thirty seconds each. The filter — a badly clogged one causes most of what looks like equipment failure. The thermostat, including its batteries and that it is actually set to cool. The breaker. And whether the outdoor unit is clear of leaves, clippings and shrubbery growing into it.

What to leave alone: anything involving refrigerant, anything inside the electrical panel or the unit's control box, and the capacitor in particular — it holds a charge after the power is off. That is not caution for its own sake.

What does a repair cost?

Do I need a repair or a replacement?

Under about ten years old with a discrete component failure, repair is usually right. Compressor failure, a coil leak, repairs starting to cluster, or a system still running R-22 all move the conversation toward replacement. We will give you the honest read either way.

My AC is blowing warm air. Is that the same as it not turning on?

No, and the difference is useful. If the blower is running, the electrical side is largely working and the fault sits in the heat-transfer chain — charge, airflow or a fouled coil. That narrows the diagnosis considerably before anyone arrives.
