SEER2 explained
Efficiency ratings are real and comparative, and they are also routinely used to sell a tier nobody needed. Here is how to read one.
What the number is
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio: cooling delivered over a season divided by electrical energy consumed. Higher is more efficient.
SEER2, introduced in 2023, measures under external static pressure closer to a real duct system. SEER2 figures therefore read slightly lower than old SEER figures for equivalent equipment, so comparing across the two is not like-for-like.
It rates the equipment, not your house
The rating comes from a laboratory. A highly rated system on leaky ducts in a hot attic will not deliver it.
Duct condition frequently affects your actual bill more than the last few points of rating do.
Where paying more genuinely pays here
Long cooling seasons mean efficiency differences accumulate over more hours than they would in a milder climate.
Variable-speed and two-stage equipment also do something the rating captures only partly: running longer at lower output removes more humidity, which is the comfort complaint people in this region actually have.
Where it does not
Buying the top tier and changing nothing else. Past a point the efficiency gain shrinks while the price step does not, and the payback period can outlast how long you stay in the house.
A fair question to ask: what is the estimated annual running-cost difference between these tiers on my house, and how many years is that to recover?
