Why heating faults surface all at once here

Coastal Georgia does not have a long heating season, and that is precisely the problem. Equipment that runs a handful of weeks a year sits idle for eight or nine months, and the first genuinely cold night is when everyone finds out what did not survive the summer — at the same time.

The most useful thing a homeowner can do costs nothing: run the heat for a few minutes on a mild day in autumn, rather than discovering a fault on the coldest night of the year alongside everybody else.

What actually fails

Igniters and flame sensors account for most of it. A hot surface igniter is a consumable that degrades every cycle and eventually cracks. A flame sensor fouls rather than fails — a thin oxide film builds up, the furnace lights, cannot confirm flame, and shuts down within seconds. That pattern, lighting then dropping out almost immediately, is close to diagnostic on its own.

A furnace that runs several minutes then stops points somewhere else, usually a limit switch responding to a genuine overheat. The cause is often airflow — a filter left in far too long, a closed return, a tired blower. Replacing the switch without fixing the airflow removes the protection and leaves the problem.

Heat pumps fail differently again. One leaning constantly on auxiliary resistance heat will keep the house warm and produce a startling bill, which arrives as a billing complaint rather than a comfort one and often traces to thermostat configuration rather than a broken part.

The safety check is not an upsell

Gas equipment carries a dimension cooling equipment does not. A cracked heat exchanger can put combustion products into the air you breathe, so inspecting it belongs in any heating service call as a matter of course rather than as an added line.

If something is unsafe we will tell you plainly, including when that is inconvenient and including when it costs us the repair. Working carbon monoxide alarms in a house with gas heat are not optional, and they are inexpensive.

There is a burning smell when the heat first comes on.

A brief smell as dust burns off the heat exchanger is normal after months of the furnace sitting idle. A persistent one is not. Neither is a burner flame that lifts and rolls, or repeated short cycling.

Should I just replace the furnace?

Not automatically. Igniters, flame sensors and limit switches are ordinary repairs with years of life behind them. A cracked heat exchanger, or repairs starting to cluster on equipment over about fifteen years old, is a different conversation and we will have it honestly.

Do you work on heat pumps as well as gas furnaces?

Yes, and a good many homes here heat with one. The diagnosis is genuinely different — defrost behaviour, auxiliary heat staging and thermostat configuration all matter in ways they do not on a gas furnace.
